Storyboard - Preview

I have two more boards. One is a feature film scene using Toy Story characters so I don't have to create and model my own characters enabling me to get right into storyboarding. The other is a scene with my character Becky and it's a TV production comedy. I like doing both ends of the spectrum from laughter to an emotional drama. It's all about the challenge of finding just the right moment in time no matter what the emotion may be.The preview page above is just some rough compositions to get me started and lay a foundation on the scene and story I'm working on. I love composition and with the 2.39 aspect ratio of film I'm able to experiment more to portray just the right emotion.
Above is a one preview page with Becky, the ever so innocent bully to all the kids in school. She always gets what she wants and all the teachers and staff think she's adorable and sweet.

These are my additional characters that go along with my previous character Penny. No values just flat colors. I have two more characters that I will add with poses and then I will board a quick scene with them all in it.
Paul - He is the theater arts and drama teacher at the school. Pompous and stuck up. He believes Becky is a star and drowns her in attention.
Becky - Innocent on the outside, greedy and selfish on the inside. She will do anything to get her way.Gwenn - Very monotone in everything she does. Never cracks a smile but she is loyal to her friend Penny and sister Stacey. She is consumed in gaining revenge against Becky the bully who harasses her.

These boards were to practice drawing characters on model, display and communicate clear instructions to the director, along with demonstrating my ability to follow a beat board since I followed the broadcast scene instead of a script. All this in order to show my ability as an entry level artist as a storyboard revisionist.

Siggraph 2008

I'll be flying down to Los Angeles to attend Siggraph on Monday August 11th. I'm looking forward in meeting new people and talking with the companies in attendance.

I will be presenting at the Vancouver Film School booth # 1315 on Wednesday, August 13 from 4pm to 6pm and also on Thursday, August 14 at 11:30am to 1:30pm. What I'll be doing is just talking about my experiences from my time at VFS to whomever stops by the booth. I'm really excited because I love conventions and since I missed the Comicon this year Siggraph is a great replacement, plus I get to show a little of my work that will be on display.

I can't wait to go because the atmosphere of a convention is something great and if you ever get the opertunity to go to a convention you should go to one. I encourage it and recomend it very highly.

My Portfolio 2008 Additions (Work In Progress)

These are my current pieces I'm working on. The first 4 are from a development series with pirates and the last one is just a fun piece. He's like the rich little dude that buys his way around the gym with money. I'll have random people exercising and a muscular clerk at the window hitting on one of the pretty members.

Pirates

I'm in the early stages of visual development and finally have some time to start this series I've been wanting to do for a while. I just finished up presentations so now I will have some more time. It has to do with pirates of course, the sea and will be all centered around a boy that has a father that works as a fisherman. Like adventure and sea creatures, but more importantly I want to just establish my vision. I want muddy green and blue colors, hazy lights, fog, and with that pen and ink cross hatching look. Colored with a wet style, like wet edges in Photoshop. I just made a brush in Photoshop and I painted this up real quick, 5-10 minutes. Will work on more characters, post photographs, and backgrounds soon.

I enjoy doing many aspects of the production process and my passion lies in developing stories, projects, and characters. I also love to write stories, draw storyboards and composite. I plan on continuing to update my portfolio concentrating on gaining a career as a storyboard artist. It enables me to combine all my passions into one like story, character design, composition, writing, layout, comic books and sequential art.

3. The image above is one of my character designs that I modeled. I wanted to show a progression of how I use a 3d package as a tool to help define my character.

6. I have more concept art but can only fit so many pieces in my portfolio.

7. The image above is more a look piece for a cartoon series I'm developing. Plus having fun with composition and layout.

8. I'm really proud of this piece. Beside life and my family Martin Luther King, Jr is up there as one of my biggest inspirations. Just like he inspires people through his speeches I want to inspire people through stories. He brings people together, preaches unity, and challenges change which is what I stand for and thus admire in him.

Life Drawing

And of course some life drawing, mostly all pen and only quick studies. I don't like long studies and when they get up around 2-5 min I usually just draw the figure more then once. I'll also practice drawing the figure by only looking at the pose once then look back at the model when I'm finished to see where I'm off and need to work on.

Penny Takes A Stroll

This is a little something I wanted to try. It's a character I'm developing and I wanted to convey a simple mood. So just a quick animatic for now. Nothing final.

Still need to finish the animation on Penny, like her arms, torso, and head. Plus the animation on the dogs and also more backgrounds. Going past shops, the city, cars, etc.

I also need to replace some of the still images and finish some others since they are just temps for now and some images are only there acting like a placeholder to see what it would look like in real time. All images will have Penny in it with her dogs.

This one's just about done. Have four more to do in this series. I'm going to have two series. The "Heart Series" which will have Love, Innocence, Inspiration, Passion, and Classics. Then there's "My First Series" which will have First Car, First Kiss and more added later when I finish school. Basically whatever doesn't fit in the heart series.

This is a WIP of the cover idea. I'll add stuff later. However, I did this in Illustrator and it took me way to long to finish it. Lot of detail you can't see here. So vector art style is out of the question. So back to Photoshop and I'll give it a painting slash design style to it.

Looks like he finally found a friend but yet still doesn't realize why everyone runs away from him. Still working on this one.

Ever since doing the drawing of this character I came up will a little story with him, the Octopus. He doesn't speak and he's always smiling. As I thought about it more the natural medium where this would be best told would be through a book. Like a children's book with short rhymes. Plus I eventually want to put out a book of my artwork and what better excuse then to have it here with an added bonus. Now I just need to team up with a writer at school. It would be a long time away before this happens but gonna start on it now.

Summertime Weee!!!

Did this last night as the sun was setting. This is just a rough piece for now but for the most part it's almost done and I think it came out decent for such little time I spent on it. One thing that turned out well was the blacks blending with the browns. Now I just need to finalize it and finish up three more photos I took. I found this awesome car that fits my characters perfectly. Can't wait to get to those.

Simplicity - Heart Series

This is a WIP of what I what to accomplish with these characters. Compositing them in a photo. It's just a rough for now because I wanted to see what problems I would run into as I do the final comp and about 4-6 more pieces. Meaning the lighting is off, the shadow, color correction is off, fix the geo, add wrinkles in the cloth, and when I retake the photo I want more depth of field. But that's the overall look. Oh, and they'll be kissing too, of course :)

Simply titled. Drew this real quick and wanted to practice painting textures quickly. I usually do big projects so this was inspired by all the blogs I've been going to and the artist I love. I wanted to keep it simple and capture the season of fall with a relax mood. Plan to do something completely different and out of my style next time. Still busy with school work, my final project and my "other" side work. Always doing more then I should.

Assistant Pose

This is a rough outline of the assistant done in Illustrator. My process is a drawing first, then I either scan it into my computer (or draw in Photoshop with my Wacom Tablet) and bring it into Illustrator. I then block out the character. Doing it this way helps me flesh out the character, I use the mirror reflect (I record it in an action) to see it in another perspective, or sometimes I'll print it and redraw it over if I'm really having trouble finding my vision. Once I'm overall happy with the pose and proportions, I then bring it into Photoshop and give it textures, shading and little details that you can't achieve in a vector program.

1940's Layout

This is a rough study for the overall layout and composition of the background along with the two main characters. The assistant is standing and holding the directors chair. There will be another chair with all the other equipment and cameras on it. Poor guy can't even sit down. Snobby directors! Will add the waiters, waitresses, busboys and the high class crowd... excuse me... "patrons" later.

1940's Style

This was a character design homework assignment. I nailed it on my first try and like it so much that I'm working on a full rendered piece. I see him as a snobby director eating at a French restaurant. Working on it in between homework and my final reel.

What you see now is me playing around with textures and different ways of displaying them. Like wrinkles, shading, stitches, etc. Just trying to establish my vision. Will update other characters soon.
